What to Expect at a TMS Consultation

A thorough assessment of symptoms, treatment history, and other health factors is needed to determine if individuals qualify for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy. Once TMS therapy is prescribed, an initial appointment will be scheduled.

TMS is non-invasive and non-systemic. Patients are awake during the treatment and can resume normal activities the rest of the day.

Step 1 — Consultation

We review medical history, answer questions, and help determine whether a TMS screening is appropriate.

Step 2 — Personalized Treatment Plan

If recommended, a plan will be tailored to your needs and scheduled, if possible.

Step 3 — Ongoing Support

Our team stays connected throughout treatment sessions, answering questions and tracking progress.

Insurance & Accessibility

We work with most major insurance plans, including Medicare. In many cases, coverage is available for qualifying individuals. A team member can help explain your coverage and guide you through any pre-authorization requirements.

About TMS Treatment

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been shown to help restore emotional responsiveness and improve overall mood, with fewer side effects compared to medication. TMS is a safe and effective treatment for depression. It is particularly recommended for patients who did not respond to medication or other treatments.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes focused magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. This innovative treatment has emerged as a promising option, particularly for individuals with treatment-resistant depression.

A magnetic coil is placed on the scalp near the targeted brain region during a TMS session. The magnetic pulses painlessly induce neural activity, aiming to rebalance dysregulated neural circuits often found in mental health disorders. Typically administered in outpatient settings over several weeks, TMS offers a well-tolerated and targeted approach for those who have not found sufficient relief from traditional treatments.

If a provider determines that TMS is a good and safe option, a discussion on the treatments will be scheduled. TMS involves multiple treatments—typically three to five per week—spread out over several weeks. For FDA-approved protocols for depression, a typical TMS course involves every weekday over six weeks with a 3-week taper period for a total of 36 treatments.

TMS can also be used by patients looking to lower their antidepressant medication dose or by anyone hoping to cease taking medication entirely. This would be done under the supervision of a medical doctor. Therefore, transcranial magnetic stimulation can be an excellent way to support this transition process.

TMS treatment is ideal for most patients with treatment-resistant depression. TMS is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, have a history of seizures, or have any metal objects in their heads. Patients with pacemakers should first consult their cardiologist.

At Hendricks Therapy, caring for individuals is our highest priority. We are dedicated to providing the tools and information needed to make TMS therapy as comfortable and effective as possible.

Our friendly staff is available to address any questions or concerns every step of the way. We will explain how TMS is used to treat depression, what to expect from TMS therapy, and provide support throughout treatment.
